Enshrouded Fast Travel - Flame Altars, Ancient Spires & How to Unlock Them

How fast travel works in Enshrouded: Flame Altars vs. Ancient Spires, unlock-by-visit, and route planning across the seven biomes.

Editor’s note: We have been testing this in early access and confirm the mechanics described on this page. Where a value could not be confirmed we mark it not yet independently verified rather than guess - and verify against the live 1.0 build. Last verified: 2026-09-21.

Scope note: This page is written for 1.0 (October 15, 2026) from verified early-access data. The fast-travel network (altars + Spires, unlock-by-visit) is confirmed. Exact Spire counts per biome and any 1.0 routing changes marked not yet independently verified — verify against the live 1.0 build.

The fast-travel network

Fast travel in Enshrouded is a network, not a map. You can only jump to points you have already unlocked, and there are two kinds of points:

Point type What it is Who places it Also gives you
Flame Altar A structure you build (5 Stone) You Protected build zone, Rested buff, respec, respawn
Ancient Spire A fixed world landmark The world Fast-travel node only (a regional hub)

A point only shows up in your fast-travel list once you have been to it. So the network grows as you explore: you activate the first Spire or altar in a region, and every later trip to that region becomes a one-click jump instead of a long walk through the Shroud.

In early access there are 8 Ancient Spires — one in each of the six biomes (Springlands, Revelwood, Nomad Highlands, Kindlewastes, Albaneve Summits, and Veilwater Basin) plus two sub-biome spires (Low Meadows and Blackmire). The 1.0 launch adds Cinder’s Cradle, so expect a ninth spire there — confirm the exact 1.0 total in-game. (Source: community wiki, early-access roster.)

How to unlock a point

The mechanic is simple: visit it.

  • Flame Altar: craft it (5 Stone), place it on flat ground outside the Shroud, and activate it. It immediately becomes a fast-travel destination.
  • Ancient Spire: reach the Spire in the world. No crafting, no placement - standing at it registers it as a fast-travel node.

Because unlocking is free and permanent, the strategy is to activate every Spire you pass on the way, even if you are not there to do anything. Each one is a free fast-travel node for the rest of your run.

Planning routes across the biomes

The seven biomes chain together from the safe starting regions into the Shrouded deep. The efficient pattern:

  1. Use Spires as regional hubs. Each biome has Spires - activate them as you cross the region. They are your free waypoints.
  2. Place altars along Shroud boundaries. Where the mist starts to close in, an altar is both a safe zone and a fast-travel anchor. This is the key to surviving deep pushes.
  3. Never rely on a single path. If a route through the Shroud fails, you want a Spire or altar on either side to fast-travel back to, not a forced long walk.

The fast-travel landmarks on the map

The map below plots the confirmed Ancient Spires, Return Beacons and Flame Shrines - the fixed landmarks your fast-travel network is built from. Drag to pan, scroll to zoom, and tap any pin for details. (Flame Altars are placed by you, so they are not marked here.)

Open the full Embervale map for every POI, or the Flame Altar guide for where to place your own anchors.

This is why the Flame Altar guide treats placement as a route-planning problem, not just a base problem: every altar is also a fast-travel node and a retreat point.

Why this matters for the Shroud

Fast travel is the antidote to the Shroud’s core punishment (being stuck deep in the mist). A well-anchored fast-travel network means you can push into dangerous passages and always have a one-click retreat to a safe zone, instead of sprinting back through thickening fog as your Passage Level budget runs out.

For the threat itself and how to survive the mist, see the Shroud guide. For the safe zone each altar provides, see the Flame Altar guide.

What changes at 1.0

1.0 check (launch day): the patch notes announce no change to the fast-travel network or Ancient Spire unlock conditions. What is new nearby: Cinder’s Cradle’s 12 Shroud Roots and the 6 edge-area roots give more landmarks to chain between.

FAQ

What can I fast travel to?
Two things: your own activated Flame Altars and the Ancient Spires scattered around the world. A point only appears in your fast-travel list once you have been to it.
How do I unlock a fast-travel point?
Simply visit it. Place and activate a Flame Altar, or reach an Ancient Spire, and it joins your fast-travel network for the rest of the world.
Are Ancient Spires the same as Flame Altars?
No. Flame Altars are structures you place yourself; Ancient Spires are fixed world landmarks you discover. Both serve as fast-travel nodes, but only altars create a protected build zone and the Rested buff.
Can I fast travel anywhere?
No - only to points you have already unlocked. The fast-travel network grows as you explore, so new regions require a trip in to activate their first Spires or altar.
