Enshrouded Runes - What They Are, Where to Get Them & How to Spend Them
Enshrouded Runes: the respec currency. Where they drop (Shroud Roots, enemies, chests, gear) and the Flame Altar respec cost of 1 Rune per point.
Editor’s note: We have been testing this in early access and confirm the mechanics described on this page. Where a value could not be confirmed we mark it not yet independently verified rather than guess - and verify against the live 1.0 build. Last verified: 2026-09-21.
Scope note: This page is written for 1.0 (October 15, 2026) from verified early-access data. The Rune sources and the 1:1 respec cost are confirmed. Exact per-source drop amounts and any 1.0 respec-cost changes marked not yet independently verified — verify against the live 1.0 build.

What Runes are
Runes are Enshrouded’s respec currency. They are not a combat stat or a crafting material - their whole job is to keep your build flexible. You spend them to refund skill points you have already allocated, which is the difference between being locked into a build and being able to test one.
The 1.0 Forging the Path skill tree is a 12-path system, so the temptation to over-invest in a path that does not fit your weapon is high. Runes are the safety valve: commit to a path, and if it does not click, refund it at the altar rather than forcing your whole build to match a role you abandoned.
Where to get Runes
Four verified sources feed your Rune count:
| Source | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Enemies | Killing any enemy | Passive income; scales with how much you fight |
| Shroud Roots | Destroying them inside the Shroud | The reason you want to be in the mist (see the Shroud guide) |
| Chests | Looting world chests | One-off pickups |
| Gear recycling | Recycling upgradable gear | Added in Update 8; turns old gear into Runes |
Reported Rune amounts per enemy source (official wiki, early access — re-check at 1.0; 0-? means the wiki lists only a lower bound):
| Enemy source | Runes dropped |
|---|---|
| Fell Critter Queen | 10-20 |
| Fell Dragon Youngling | 81 |
| Fell Thunderbrute | 22 |
| Fell Banshee | 0-11 |
| Fell Knight | 0-9 |
| Fell Footsoldier | 0-? |
Rune yields per Shroud Root, per chest, and the gear-recycling rate are not published by the wiki — verify in-game at 1.0.
The Shroud Roots are the interesting one: they are the mechanic that turns the Shroud from pure threat into a resource. You take the risk of the mist, and the reward for it is the very currency that keeps your build flexible.
How to spend them
You spend Runes at a Flame Altar. Open the altar menu and select Reset Skills - it refunds your allocated points at 1 Rune per previously-spent point.
The practical loop:
- Spend points on a path you want to test.
- If it fits your weapon and role, keep it.
- If it does not, go to the nearest altar, refund the points (paying 1 Rune each), and reallocate.
Because the cost is proportional to how much you spent, a small experiment is cheap and a full path change is expensive - the mechanic naturally punishes over-investing in a path you are not sure about.
1.0 check (launch day): the patch notes announce no respec-cost change — the 1:1 Rune rate stands. One caveat: loading a pre-1.0 save resets the skill tree entirely, so your first “respec” after migrating is a full rebuild.
For the altar’s full role (safe zone, rest, respawn), see the Flame Altar guide. For where the Shroud Roots that drop Runes live, see the Shroud guide.
What changes at 1.0
1.0 check (launch day): the patch notes change no Rune source, the respec cost stays 1:1, and gear recycling carries over from Update 8. Runes still drop from Shroud Roots — and 1.0 adds 12 new Shroud Roots in Cinder’s Cradle plus 6 more in the Springlands/Blackmire/Kindlewastes edge areas.
