Enshrouded Shroud - How the Hostile Mist Works and How to Survive It

What the Shroud is in Enshrouded: the hostile mist, why it thickens after dark, Shroud Passage Level, and safe-zone tactics to survive it.

Editor’s note: We have been testing this in early access and confirm the mechanics described on this page. Where a value could not be confirmed we mark it not yet independently verified rather than guess - and verify against the live 1.0 build. Last verified: 2026-09-21.

Scope note: This page is written for 1.0 (October 15, 2026) from verified early-access data. The core Shroud behavior below is confirmed. Exact Passage Level caps, growth rates, and Dead Shroud thresholds marked not yet independently verified — verify against the live 1.0 build.

What the Shroud is

The Shroud is the hostile mist that defines Enshrouded. It is a fog that spreads across the world and slowly reclaims it, and it is the central survival pressure of the game: the further you push into it, the faster it works against you. Everything about your base, your routes, and your gear choices is built around managing the Shroud.

It is not a single enemy you can fight off. It is an environmental threat - a zone that punishes you for staying too deep, for too long, or for the wrong time of day.

Why it thickens after dark

The verified early-access behavior is that the Shroud grows after dark. The same area that is passable at night-adjacent is far more dangerous once it is fully dark. This is why the game’s early loop pushes you to build shelter and a safe warm spot before you push far out.

Practical rule: treat the night as a Shroud event. If you are out in the mist when it starts to thicken, you are already behind - head for your nearest safe zone before the dark closes in.

Shroud Passage Level

Your Shroud Passage Level is the rating that decides how long you can survive inside red / Deadly Shroud. The higher it is, the longer you can push deep into the mist before it overwhelms you; the lower it is, the faster you have to turn back.

This is the mechanic that makes the Shroud a distance problem rather than a pure damage problem: you are not trying to out-heal the mist, you are trying to not stay in it past your Passage Level budget.

Safe-zone tactics

The Shroud is managed with Flame Altars. Two rules govern it:

  • An altar must be placed outside the Shroud. It will not function inside the mist, so you drop it on clear ground and let the build zone reach toward the fog.
  • A higher Flame lets you survive deeper Shroud longer. Use the altar’s protected build zone as your fallback point when pushing into dangerous passages.

The common tactic is to string altars along Shroud boundaries, creating safe retreat points between the open world and the mist. Always keep a safe zone within sprint range before you commit to a deep push - a camp that has no retreat point is a camp that loses your character.

Shroud Roots

Inside the Shroud you will find Shroud Roots - and destroying them drops Runes, the respec currency. They are the reason you ever want to be in the mist: the Shroud is both your danger and one of your sources of progression.

For the safe zone itself, see the Flame Altar guide. For moving between your safe zones without walking back through the mist, see Fast Travel & Ancient Spires.

What changes at 1.0

Confirmed on the 1.0 patch notes:

  • Wisp of Light duration raised from 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Hourglasses are more frequent and grant +70% Shroud time; large Fell enemies now drop them too.
  • Flame 11 (or lower via a world setting) lets you push the Shroud back from a Flame Altar.
  • Shroud-time stacking effects were nerfed overall, and blocking now regenerates stamina.
  • The Shroud time-management system was reworked, and Cinder’s Cradle added 12 new Shroud Roots with 6 more in the Springlands/Blackmire/Kindlewastes edge areas.

FAQ

What is the Shroud?
A hostile mist that spreads across the world and reclaims it. It is the core survival pressure in Enshrouded: the deeper you are in it, the harder the game becomes.
When is the Shroud most dangerous?
After dark. The mist thickens at night, so pushing into the Shroud at night is far riskier than the same trip by day.
What is Shroud Passage Level?
A rating that determines how long you can survive inside red/Deadly Shroud before the mist overwhelms you. The higher it is, the deeper you can push.
How do I make a safe zone in the Shroud?
Place a Flame Altar on clear ground outside the Shroud and let its build zone reach toward the mist. The protected area becomes your fallback point. See the Flame Altar guide.
