Forging the Path Skill Tree Guide - The 12 Paths Explained

How the Forging the Path (Update 8) skill tree rebuild works: 12 class paths in three color categories plus a central hub, what changed, and respec mechanics.

Editor’s note: We have been testing this in early access and confirm the mechanics and location described on this page. Where a value could not be confirmed we mark it verify at 1.0 rather than guess - and re-check on launch day. Last verified: 2026-09-20.

Forging the Path (Update 8) is the biggest single overhaul since Enshrouded entered early access, and the skill tree is its centerpiece. This guide breaks down exactly what changed, how the four rings work, and what to do with your old build now.

What is Forging the Path?

Forging the Path (Update 8, v0.9.1.0) is the final major update before 1.0 (scheduled for October 15, 2026). Its headline change is a complete restructure of the skill tree: the old free-form 184-point pool is now organized into 12 class paths circling a central hub of general survival skills, color-coded into three broad categories.

The key invariant: there are still no fixed classes. You do not “pick Warrior” - you allocate points along the Warrior path, and your build becomes more Warrior-like. The paths are a navigation aid, not a class lock; you can freely mix any of the 12.

How the 12 paths are organized

The skill tree is divided into three color categories, each with 4 paths:

Color Category Paths (4 each)
Red Melee & defense Warrior, Barbarian, Guardian (Tank), Battlemage
Green Agility, ranged & survival Athlete, Ranger, Assassin, Beastmaster
Blue Magic & support Wizard, Healer, Trickster, Mage

Center hub (uncolored): core skills that benefit every build - Double Jump, Blink, Updraft, Merciless Strike, Power Parry, Miner, and other survival/utility nodes.

Note: some pre-1.0 community sources group these as a four-ring layout with a separate “Gold = Mobility (Athlete)” ring; the 1.0 build should be confirmed in-game. The 12-path + center-hub structure above is what the current patch notes describe.

Click a path to see its focus, the stat to invest, and the first skills to grab. This reflects the Update 8 structure — per-path skill names and point costs are marked verify at 1.0 until launch.

What changed in Update 8 (skill tree)

  • Full reset + refund: on Update 8, every player’s skill tree was reset and all skill points refunded so players could re-allocate freely on the new tree.
  • Double Jump moved to the center hub - now accessible from any build, not just a specific tree.
  • New weapon/tool specialization skills added across the paths.
  • Skills can now be upgraded after unlocking (not just unlocked once), opening more build optimization.
  • Base unlock costs are lower than before, so you reach outer branches faster; upgrade costs are where the real points go.
  • New dodge-mode selection skill - pick how your dodge behaves.
  • Max-health boost options and a tree zoom-out for better overview.

Universal skills to take first (every build)

These center-hub skills benefit nearly every build and should be early picks:

Skill Effect
Double Jump Jump again mid-air - exploration, combat positioning, escape
Blink Replace dodge roll with a short-range teleport through enemies
Updraft Extend glider flight; climb steep terrain mid-glide
Merciless Attack Crushing damage to overpowered (staggered) enemies
Power Parry More stun-bar fill on successful parries
Miner 10-25% chance to double ore from mining

The 12 paths at a glance

Path Focus
Center General survival, finishers, backstabs, faster gathering
Athlete Physical combat speed, jump attacks, stamina recovery
Barbarian Two-handed weapons, stun, massive damage
Warrior All melee weapons, health, attack speed
Guardian (Tank) Heavy armor, party protection
Battlemage Wands + wards, close-range magic, self-sustain
Healer Healing auras, party support
Wizard Elemental magic (fire/ice/lightning), ranged
Trickster Magic crowd control (stun, knockback)
Assassin Bow/dagger crits, efficient glider
Ranger Multi-shot arrows, weak-point damage
Beastmaster Tame and ride animals, wilderness survival

Each path has a dedicated build deep-dive (the stat to invest, first skill picks, the weapon and armor that fit, and the group role). For the weapon and armor sides of the same decision, see the best weapons guide and the best armor guide.

How does respec work?

Respecing at a Flame Altar resets your allocated skill points. The cost is paid in Rune at 1 Rune per skill point refunded. Rune are obtained by recycling upgradable equipment (armors, shields, wards, rings, etc.), so respec is cheap enough to experiment freely.

A returner switching from the old tree to the new one should expect to do at least one full respec on their first session (Update 8 already refunded everyone’s points once; 1.0 may or may not repeat this).

What should you invest in first?

Because the 12 paths map to distinct playstyles, your first few points set the direction. As a rule:

  • Center hub first: Double Jump, Blink, and Updraft are universal picks for almost every build.
  • Then one primary path: commit to a single path (e.g. Warrior for melee, Wizard for magic, Ranger for ranged) before mixing.
  • Support paths for co-op: Healer (Water Aura) and Guardian (Tank) shine in groups; Athlete’s mobility helps any damage path.

Is the old early-access build still valid?

No - the old tree no longer exists. If you have a saved build from early access, the 1.0 tree is a fresh start. The should-you-buy-1.0 guide covers what this means for returners specifically, and the 1.0 update overview tracks everything else changing at launch.
