Enshrouded Sun Temples - The Four Puzzle Chests Explained

Enshrouded's four Sun Temples, how their switch-and-lever puzzles work, what the ornate chest holds, and the re-log trick that makes their loot farmable.

Editor’s note: We have been testing this in early access and confirm the temple count, the puzzle type and the chest-reset behaviour. Where a detail could not be confirmed we mark it not yet independently verified rather than guess - and verify against the live 1.0 build. Last verified: 2026-09-29.

Sun Temples are the smallest of Enshrouded’s four instance types and the most rewarding per minute spent. Each one is a single puzzle arena: a sequence of switches, levers and arrow buttons, a wave of enemies while you work it out, and an ornate chest at the end. Four exist, and unlike most content in this game, you can come back for the chest.

How do Sun Temple puzzles work?

Every temple runs the same shape of problem:

  1. Read the room. Switches, levers and arrow buttons are placed where you can see the effect they have - a door, a gate, a platform.
  2. Work the sequence. The puzzle is an order, not a fight. Wrong inputs usually reset a step rather than punishing you.
  3. Survive the spawn. Clearing the mechanism brings enemies into the room. This is the part that kills a solo player who is still looking at the wall.
  4. Take the ornate chest. Gold plus gear, and the only reason to be here.

No specific build is required. Ranged damage is comfortable because you are often fighting in a room you have already broken up with pillars and gates - see best weapons by playstyle for what to bring.

Can you farm Sun Temple chests?

The chest is scripted as one-time loot, but logging out and back in resets it. That makes the Sun Temples the only instance type where a repeatable gear run is the intended experience rather than an exploit-adjacent accident:

  • Ancient Spires - one-time loot, permanent fast-travel node
  • Hollow Halls - repeatable, but a full dungeon with a boss
  • Night Sanctums - repeatable, but night-gated and Spark-costed
  • Sun Temples - repeatable, short, no boss

For a quick gear top-up between Flame gates, a Temple run is the cheapest loop in the game.

1.0 check (launch day): the exact button/lever sequences are still not documented in any official source and stay pending in-game verification. What did change for the chests: every chest’s legendary chance is +5%, wooden chests can drop silver-tier gear, and chests now contain gold for vanity crafting.

Where are the Sun Temples located?

Temples are not progression gates. They are optional gear stops inside the biome band you are already clearing, which makes them the natural “something to do” between boss arenas. The key locations route puts them in Flame order.

FAQ

How many Sun Temples are in Enshrouded?
Four are named in early access: Northern, Eastern, Southeastern - also called Shatterbone - and Southwestern. The Northern temple sits in the Nomad Highlands band and the Southwestern in the Kindlewastes / Low Meadows band.
Can you farm a Sun Temple chest?
Yes, in practice. The chest is designed as one-time loot, but logging out and back in resets it, so a Temple is a repeatable gear run rather than a single pickup.
Do Sun Temples have bosses?
No. Temples spawn ordinary enemies as part of the puzzle room. The boss arenas are separate - they sit out in the open world at Elixir Wells and Shroud locations.
What is the Shatterbone Temple?
An alternative name for the Southeastern Sun Temple. If you are reading a guide that says Shatterbone, it means the same structure.
