Enshrouded Best Weapons by Playstyle - What to Pick and Why
Enshrouded has no single best weapon - it depends on playstyle, skill path, and the boss. A no-listicle guide to matching weapon types to builds, with first picks.
This is deliberately not a “top 10 weapons” list. Enshrouded has no fixed classes, so there is no single best weapon - the 12 Forging the Path paths are a navigation aid, not a class lock. What matters is matching a weapon type to how you want to fight, then letting your path shape it. The picks below are starting directions, not requirements.
How to read it: the “best” weapon is the one that fits (a) your primary path, (b) your role in the group, and (c) the boss’s confirmed weakness. A respec at the Flame Altar is 1 Rune per point, so you can test a build, find it does not fit, and refund it cheaply.
The universal first picks (every weapon type)
Before committing to a weapon, grab the center-hub skills that help every build - these do not depend on weapon type:
| Skill | Why first |
|---|---|
| Double Jump | Escape, repositioning, and reach - useful with any weapon in every fight and biome |
| Blink | A dodge that is a short teleport through enemies - pure survivability no matter what you hold |
| Updraft | Climb steep terrain mid-glide - turns vertical obstacles into shortcuts for any build |
Take these first, then commit to one primary path and let that path decide your weapon. See the skill tree guide for the full hub list and costs.
Melee
Paths: Warrior (all melee, health, attack speed) and Barbarian (two-handed, stun, massive damage).
- Two-handed (two-hand) weapons are the Barbarian play: they stagger enemies, and staggered (overpowered) enemies take crushing Merciless Attack damage. If you want a stagger-and-smash loop, this is the type.
- One-handed / all-melee is the Warrior play: more attack speed and health, so you stay in the fight longer. Pair with Power Parry for the counter-attack windows.
Good for: players who like being in the thick of the fight - the front line of a group.
Ranged
Paths: Ranger (multi-shot arrows, weak-point damage) and Assassin (bow/dagger crits, efficient glider).
- Bow is the back-line physical DPS. Ranger turns it into multi-shot and weak-point damage from a distance; Assassin turns it into crits plus a fast glider so you can reposition when a target closes in. Keep Blink and Updraft high for repositioning.
- Dagger is the Assassin’s close-range crit option - fast, crit-focused, and good when you need a quick follow-up after a dodge or when someone is in your face.
Good for: players who want to stay out of melee range and kite. A bow is also the most forgiving solo choice.
Magic
Paths: Wizard (elemental fire/ice/lightning, ranged) and Battlemage (wands + wards, close-range magic, self-sustain).
- Wand / staff is the elemental DPS type. Wizard kites from range, which beats melee for low-HP builds, and lets you match your element to a boss’s confirmed weakness - an ice weapon is worth a lot on a fire-weak fight, and vice versa.
- Battlemage is the close-range variant: wands plus wards for self-sustain, so you can stay in melee range and still hold.
Good for: players who prefer range and control, and who want elemental matchups to drive their weapon choice.
Mobility / utility
Paths: Athlete (physical speed, jump attacks, stamina recovery) and Beastmaster (tame and ride animals, wilderness survival).
- Athlete works best with whatever weapon your damage path uses, because its jump attacks and stamina recovery let you reposition constantly. The weapon is secondary here - the build is the movement.
- Beastmaster is the supply line: your tamed animals cross terrain the rest of the group cannot and can hold aggro, which lets you fight with your preferred weapon safely.
Good for: explorers and the group’s support/mobility slot - the person who carries supplies and reaches things.
Tank / support (group)
Paths: Guardian (heavy armor, party protection) and Healer (healing auras, party support).
- Guardian uses whatever heavy melee you can hold while in armor - the weapon matters less than the heavy armor and holding aggro so the party can work.
- Healer leans on auras (the co-op team planner maps the full lineup), so the weapon is secondary; sustain and positioning matter more than raw damage.
Good for: co-op play. Tank + Healer is the backbone of a group - without a healer even a tank goes down in the Shroud, and without a tank the healer gets focused.
Matching the weapon to the boss
The single most useful weapon rule in Enshrouded is elemental weakness. Each boss has a confirmed weak element, and matching your weapon to it is worth more than any single “best” weapon. The bosses & dungeons hub lists the whole roster; a few examples of how the rule applies:
- The Vukah Brawler is weak to fire - a fire-weak matchup, so a fire-elemental weapon (Wizard/Battlemage) or a fire-coated build is the cleanest kill.
- The Fell Cyclops is weak to fire and resists ice and blunt - so do not bring an ice weapon against it.
- The Fell Dragon Youngling reflects your rock projectiles and is stun-gated - this is a ranged/stun fight, so keep distance and do not throw rocks at it.
Decision guide
When choosing a weapon, work through these four questions in order:
- What path am I committing to first? That decides the weapon type family.
- What role am I filling in the group? Tank/support players care less about raw damage than the damage players do.
- What am I about to fight? Match the elemental weakness before anything else.
- Can I kite, or do I need to be in melee? Ranged if you can keep distance, melee if the arena or build pulls you in.
If the answer to any of those shifts, respec at the Flame Altar rather than forcing a build to fit a weapon. For stamina and positioning tips that apply to every weapon, see the Comfort system guide.
What changes at 1.0
The Forging the Path rebuild (Update 8) is a combat/skill rebuild, so the path-to-weapon-type mapping carries over from early access. What needs re-checking on launch day is the specific weapon data:
- The exact damage, crit, and stagger values of named weapons per type.
- Which named weapons are top-tier at the level cap.
- Whether any weapon-to-path pairing shifts with the 1.0 balance pass.
The structural advice on this page - match the type to the playstyle, then match the element to the boss - is expected to hold; the numbers are what to re-verify.
