Enshrouded NPCs - The Five Artisans, Where to Find Them & How to Rescue
Enshrouded has five recruitable NPC artisans - Blacksmith, Alchemist, Hunter, Farmer, Carpenter. Where to find each one, what they unlock, and the rescue flow.
Scope note: This page is written for 1.0 (October 15, 2026) from verified early-access data. Artisan roles, workshops, and the rescue flow are confirmed. Exact recruitment quest chains and workshop placement requirements are marked not yet independently verified.
NPCs in Enshrouded are the five artisans — there is no generic “villager”. Every NPC that matters is one of them, each a named character tied to a workshop and a category of recipes. You rescue them from a biome landmark, they walk to your base, and you assign them to their station. Once assigned they stay permanently.
The five artisans at a glance
| NPC | Workshop | Unlocks | Where to find |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blacksmith | Anvil Forge | Tools, weapons, armor, repair kits - and early on, the Glider and Grappling Hook | Springlands (first biome) |
| Alchemist | Alchemy Station | Potions, poisons, fireworks, utility consumables | Springlands → Revelwood |
| Hunter | Hunting Lodge | Traps, bait, arrows, animal-derived gear | Revelwood (mid-game) |
| Farmer | Farm Plot + Seed Bench | Food, seeds, crop recipes | Springlands (first biome) |
| Carpenter | Carpenter’s Bench | Building materials, furniture, Comfort items, decorations | Springlands → Revelwood |
The community wiki pins each rescue to a specific vault and quest (early-access data, to be verified at 1.0):
| Artisan | Rescue site | Unlock quest |
|---|---|---|
| Blacksmith (Oswald Anders) | Ancient Vault - Blacksmith, near the Cinder Vault exit | Find The Sleeping Survivor |
| Alchemist (Balthazar) | Ancient Vault - Alchemist | Powerful Alchemy |
| Carpenter (Cade Hawthorn) | Ancient Vault - Carpenter | Carpentry Assistance |
| Hunter (Athalan Skree) | Ancient Vault - Hunter | Hunter Becomes The Hunted |
| Farmer (Emily Fray) | Ancient Vault - Farmer | Growing Stronger Together |
| Collector (Alden Crowley) | Springlands Hollow Halls (at the end) | Explore The Hollow Halls |
Every artisan except the Collector is rescued from an Ancient Vault; the Collector is found at the end of the Springlands Hollow Halls. Per the community wiki the gate is the rescue quest, not a Flame level.
The rescue flow
The same four steps apply to every artisan:
- Build the workshop at your Flame Altar base - e.g. the Anvil Forge for the Blacksmith.
- Find and rescue the NPC at their biome landmark. They follow you to the base once freed.
- Assign them to the workshop - walk them to the station and interact to assign.
- Craft - open the station to see that artisan’s full recipe tree.
Artisans do not leave once assigned. Deconstruct and move a workshop and the artisan stays with the base, not the station.
1.0 check (launch day): quests split into main and side lines at 1.0, but no quest markers or dialogue gates were added to the artisan rescue chain — it remains find-and-follow. A new survivor versed in Ancient knowledge and recipes joins at 1.0.
Why the Blacksmith first
The rescue order matters more than it looks. The beginner guide recommends the Blacksmith early because he is the one who unlocks the Glider and the Grappling Hook - the two biggest early-mobility unlocks in the game. Everything vertical in Enshrouded (climbing, gliding to a high Flame Altar, reaching a boss arena) depends on those two items. The Farmer follows immediately (food is your survival backbone), then the Alchemist (potions before the first serious boss), then the Hunter and Carpenter as you reach mid-game biomes.
What each artisan is for
- Blacksmith - your gear source. Tools (pickaxes, axes, sickles), weapons (swords, staves, bows, daggers), armor, and repair kits, with a new tier per biome. Prioritize his first weapon upgrade before leaving Springlands - the difference between Bronze and the default wooden weapon is huge in the first boss fights.
- Alchemist - everything in your hotbar. Healing and Shroud-mitigation potions, buff potions (stamina, defense, fire resistance), weapon poisons, and signal flares for co-op.
- Hunter - ranged and auto-farming. Arrows (regular, fire, poison), placeable traps that farm meat and leather, and hide-tier gear for mid-game.
- Farmer - your sustainability. Cooked food with Stamina and Comfort buffs, plus seeds for farm plots - crop rotation by biome is how you keep the Comfort system fed.
- Carpenter - construction and Comfort. Refined wood, furniture, wall hangings, and the high-Comfort pieces that push a base past the cap. The artisan you return to most if you are building a big base.
For the full recipe tree per artisan, the crafting overview has the editorial breakdown, and the official Enshrouded wiki has the raw item database - we link out for data, and keep the editorial here.
In a group
In co-op each player can recruit their own set of artisans, but a shared base means one workshop per station. The co-op team planner covers how to split roles so someone always keeps the workshops fed.
