Enshrouded First Base: Flame Altar, Build Area and Comfort

How to build your first base in Enshrouded: place the first Flame Altar, grow the build area with Shroud Cores, then use Comfort furniture to fund stamina.

Editor’s note: the sequence below is compiled from systems we have confirmed in early access - the altar’s protected zone, the Shroud Core expansions, the Comfort cap - and it is written as an order of operations, not as a build tutorial with measurements. Where a number is cited it is one we hold as verified; the per-step costs are not. Last verified: 2026-09-30.

Enshrouded’s building has one rule that surprises players coming from other survival games: nothing attacks your base. That changes what “a good first base” means - it is not a fortress, it is a Shroud-safe zone with enough Comfort to keep you moving.

What is the first step?

The Flame Altar. It is the object that creates the build zone at all: inside it you get a protected area with extended Shroud-survival time (whether the mist fully recedes there is not yet independently verified). No altar means no base - just a campfire in the fog.

Our beginner guide puts the first altar right after your starting tools: craft a Stone Axe and Stone Pickaxe, then place the altar on flat, Shroud-free ground. That ground condition is the part people skip and then fight for the next hour.

Where should the first base go?

Consideration Why it decides the spot
Flat, Shroud-free ground The altar’s zone is what keeps you alive; placing it in the mist just moves the problem
Your spawn area first The Cindervault is where you start, where your first altar goes, and where the rescued Blacksmith lives
Room to grow The zone expands three times, so leave space rather than boxing yourself in
Near what you farm A base you have to glider to every time is a base you stop using

How do you make the build area bigger?

With Shroud Cores. The zone grows in three steps, from roughly 40 cubed to 120 cubed, and each step costs Cores. Cores come from Elixir Wells - fixed world nodes, one per region band, each held by a Fell Thunderbrute. That boss is the slowest in the game with long recovery windows, so a Core run is a kiting exercise rather than a gear check.

1.0 check (launch day): the patch notes do not change the build-zone expansion ladder (40³ → 80³ → 120³ → 160³ with Shroud Cores and Nexuses). What did change: the per-world altar cap rises to 16 (15, plus one after the final threat).

How many bases can you have?

Up to 10 Flame Altars at Flame 9. Since one altar defines one base zone, a second altar is how you get a forward camp in a deeper biome - and since fast travel runs through the Ancient Spire network, altars are also what make a long supply run survivable rather than a slog.

What do you build inside it first?

Comfort. The Comfort system caps at 119 and converts furniture into the Rested buff - roughly two hours of it at the cap - which is the stamina economy of everything you do outside the base. The Carpenter is the artisan for building and decoration pieces, so rescuing him is what turns an empty zone into a base. For layouts rather than mechanics, the base design gallery is the visual reference.

What still needs 1.0 verification?

The per-step Core cost and the exact zone size at each expansion (we publish the 40³ → 120³ range, not invented intermediate figures), the Shroud Core count each Well yields, and whether 1.0 adjusts the 10-altar cap or the Comfort cap. All four are on the launch-day list; none of them change the order of operations above.

FAQ

How do you build a base in Enshrouded?
Place a Flame Altar first - it creates the protected build zone and extends how long you survive inside the Shroud. Then expand that zone with Shroud Cores, and add Comfort furniture for the Rested buff.
How do you make the build area bigger in Enshrouded?
With Shroud Cores. The zone grows from roughly 40 cubed to 120 cubed across three expansions; the Cores come from Elixir Wells, each guarded by a Fell Thunderbrute.
How many Flame Altars can you place?
Up to 10 at Flame 9. One altar per base location, so a second altar is how you get a second base or a forward camp in a deeper biome.
Do enemies attack your base in Enshrouded?
No. Base building here is creative rather than defensive - nothing raids your camp, so the pressure comes from the Shroud and from stamina, not from sieges.
