Enshrouded Solo vs Co-op Builds - What Changes in a Party

What actually changes about an Enshrouded build when you stop playing solo: difficulty scaling, role coverage, Shroud survival

Editor’s note: We have been testing this in early access and confirm the role behaviour described on this page. How a party changes a boss’s numbers is one of the things we could not confirm, so it stays a marker rather than a claim. Where a value could not be confirmed we mark it not yet independently verified rather than guess - and verify against the live 1.0 build. Last verified: 2026-09-29.

Most Enshrouded build advice quietly assumes you are alone. That is the right default - you spend most of your hours solo - but the moment a second player joins, three things change: who absorbs the boss’s damage, what your party is short of, and where the actual danger lives. This page is the diff between the two modes.

Does Enshrouded scale difficulty for co-op?

Solo In a party
Boss difficulty Yours alone Who absorbs it in a group: not yet independently verified
What you must self-supply Damage, healing, aggro, utility Only your assigned role
Where points go Defensive and sustain points you cannot skip Freed up into damage
The real threat The boss itself The Shroud between camps, and the corpse run
Stun / gate checks You carry the whole number Split across everyone shooting
A bad build pick costs A run back to an altar and Runes Also everyone else’s time

The last row is the one people underestimate: group play makes respec politics, not respec cost. A full refund still costs one Rune per allocated point at a Flame Altar, but agreeing who refunds what is the actual coordination problem. Sort it before you travel.

What roles does a co-op squad need?

  • Tank - Guardian is the dedicated pick (heavy armour, aggro, party protection). Warrior covers it in a pinch.
  • Healer - Healer (healing auras and party support). Non-optional above two players: without a healer the tank goes down in the Shroud.
  • Melee DPS - Barbarian, Battlemage, Trickster for crowd control.
  • Ranged / magic DPS - Ranger, Mage, Wizard, Assassin.
  • Support at 6+ - Athlete (mobility, stamina) or Beastmaster (tame and ride, supply). Reserve one slot once the party gets big enough that travel and resupply become the bottleneck.

Spread the DPS across melee, ranged and magic rather than stacking one type - boss resistances are per-boss, and a party of four Rangers is one flying boss fight away from being useless. The matchup logic is on the flying enemies page.

Enter your actual headcount in the co-op team planner and it outputs the lineup with the path each role should build.

What changes when you play solo?

Playing alone, your build has to carry the whole job list. Two consequences:

  1. Sustain points are not optional. The defensive and recovery investment a party healer would cover has to come out of your 184-point pool.
  2. Fight selection becomes your difficulty setting. A Flame gate you cannot clear solo is not a gear problem, it is a scheduling problem - clear the Elixir Wells and Hollow Halls in the band you can, and come back with the head.

The one-file answer for a solo character is the beginner guide progression, and the pick-by-playstyle answer is best builds by playstyle.

What actually kills parties in Enshrouded?

Parties do not usually wipe to the boss. They wipe to the mist and the distance:

  • Camp placement. One Flame Altar per world region is the retreat line; a party with no altar near the arena has no second attempt, it has a funeral.
  • Corpse runs into Shroud. Someone dies deep in the mist and the rescue becomes the wipe. Position before the pull, not after.
  • Server assumptions. A 16-player world is a dedicated-server conversation, not a lobby one. If you are planning past a handful of friends, the hosting comparison covers the trade-offs neutrally.

FAQ

Does Enshrouded scale bosses for a group?
Not in a way we can confirm - how Enshrouded adjusts boss or dungeon difficulty by group size is not verified in early access (not yet independently verified). What a party does change is role coverage: one player heals and one holds aggro so the rest build for damage, which is why a Flame 8 fight that is brutal solo is manageable in a coordinated group. The practical effect on your build is fewer defensive points per person and more role coverage.
How many players can play together?
PC supports up to 16 players in a shared world; the PS5 version supports up to 8. Most real sessions run 2-6 people, which is the band the co-op team planner is built around.
Do I have to pick a class for group play?
No. Enshrouded has no fixed classes - a role means investing along one of the 12 skill paths, and you can reallocate at a Flame Altar for one Rune per point. Roles are coordination agreements, not character locks.
What is the minimum viable party?
Two: one tank and one healer is the backbone. Without a healer the tank goes down in the Shroud; without a tank the healer gets focused. Everything above two is extra damage or utility.
