Editor’s note: We have been testing this in early access and confirm the mechanics and location described on this page. Where a value could not be confirmed we mark it verify at 1.0 rather than guess - and re-check on launch day. Last verified: 2026-09-20.
The Flame Altar is the single most important structure in Enshrouded. It is your home base, your safe zone, your fast-travel node, and your respec station - almost every strategic decision in the game is about where you put one. This page covers exactly what it does, how it interacts with the Shroud, and how to place it well.
What the Flame Altar does
| Function | What it does |
|---|---|
| Safe build zone | Defines a protected sphere (starts 40×40×40) where your structures do not reset |
| Fast travel | A fast-travel point between all activated altars (and Ancient Spires) |
| Skill respec | “Reset Skills” in the altar menu, paid in Runes |
| Respawn point | Where you respawn if you are far from your active camp |
| Rested buff | Sit or stand next to it to gain the Rested (stamina) buff |
| Base hub | Anchor for crafting stations, storage/magic chests, and rescued NPCs |
The safe build zone
The altar defines a buildable sphere. Anything you build inside it is protected; anything built outside it resets after roughly 30 minutes or when you restart the game. The base sphere is 40×40×40, and you can expand it up to 120×120×120 using Shroud Cores - so a well-placed, upgraded altar gives you a genuinely large permanent base.
This is why placement matters so much: the sphere is the boundary of your permanent territory. A camp that keeps outgrowing its radius is a camp that keeps losing its outlying structures.
How it interacts with the Shroud
Two rules govern the relationship between an altar and the Shroud (the hostile mist):
- An altar must be placed outside the Shroud. It will not function inside the mist, so you always drop it on clear ground and let the build zone reach into the Shroud if you want.
- A higher Flame lets you survive deeper in the Shroud longer. Your “Shroud Passage Level” determines how long you can push into red/Deadly Shroud. The common tactic is to place altars at Shroud boundaries, creating safe fallback points between the open world and the dangerous passages.
The verified behavior is a protected build zone plus extended Shroud-survival time - not a healing bubble. Do not assume the mist fully recedes or heals you inside the radius.
Skill respec
The altar’s “Reset Skills” option refunds your allocated skill points. The cost is 1 Rune per previously-spent point. Runes come from defeating enemies, destroying Shroud Roots, looting chests, and - since Update 8 - recycling upgradable gear. That makes a respec cheap enough to experiment with: test a new path, and if it does not fit the weapon you want, refund it at the altar rather than forcing a build to match a role.
For what the new 12-path tree looks like and which points to refund first, see the Forging the Path skill tree guide.
How to place one
- Recipe: craft it with 5 Stone in the inventory crafting menu. There is no level requirement - the recipe is granted during the Cinder Vault intro.
- Spot: flat, unobstructed ground outside the Shroud. You cannot move an altar once placed; if you need it elsewhere, extinguish it and rebuild.
- Expand: upgrade the build zone with Shroud Cores as your base grows, and place additional altars at Shroud boundaries as you push into new regions.
The cap: up to 10 per world
You can have up to 10 Flame Altars active per world. The cap is tied to your Flame Level - it maxes out at 10 by Flame Level 9. Ten altars is enough to anchor every biome of the six-region world plus a few key Shroud boundaries, so plan their placement as you travel rather than hoarding the cap for the endgame.
Next steps
- Make the camp cozy. The Rested buff is the bridge to the Comfort system, where shelter, warmth, and furniture extend it.
- Design the layout. For base shapes that fit each region, see the base design gallery.
