Enshrouded Flame Altar — Upgrades, Placement Rules & How to Move It

Place it outside the Shroud with 5 Stone, grow the build zone 40³→160³, respec for 1 Rune per point, and extinguish it to move

Editor’s note: We have been testing this in early access and confirm the mechanics and location described on this page. Where a value could not be confirmed we mark it not yet independently verified rather than guess - and cross-check against the live 1.0 build. Last verified: 2026-10-15.

The Flame Altar is the single most important structure in Enshrouded. It is your home base, your safe zone, your fast-travel node, and your respec station - almost every strategic decision in the game is about where you put one. This page covers exactly what it does, how it interacts with the Shroud, and how to place it well.

What the Flame Altar does

Function What it does
Safe build zone Defines a protected sphere (starts 40×40×40) where your structures do not reset
Fast travel A fast-travel point between all activated altars (and Ancient Spires)
Skill respec “Reset Skills” in the altar menu, paid in Runes
Respawn point Where you respawn if you are far from your active camp
Rested buff Sit or stand next to it to gain the Rested (stamina) buff
Base hub Anchor for crafting stations, storage/magic chests, and rescued NPCs

The safe build zone

The altar defines a buildable sphere. Anything you build inside it is protected; anything built outside it resets after roughly 30 minutes or when you restart the game. The base sphere is 40×40×40, and you can expand it up to 120×120×120 using Shroud Cores - so a well-placed, upgraded altar gives you a genuinely large permanent base.

This is why placement matters so much: the sphere is the boundary of your permanent territory. A camp that keeps outgrowing its radius is a camp that keeps losing its outlying structures.

Build-zone expansion by altar level, from the community wiki (early access — re-check at 1.0):

Altar Level Maximum Size Materials Required Required Flame Level
Level 1 40x40x40 None 1
Level 2 80x80x80 1 Shroud Core 1
Level 3 120x120x120 5 Shroud Core 2
Level 4 160x160x160 5 Shroud Nexus 3

Pick a target altar level to see the total Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexuses needed to reach it. Costs for Levels 5–16 arrive with 1.0 — those tiers are marked verify at 1.0 and the totals extend automatically at launch.

Target level 1
Build zone size 40×40×40
Shroud Cores 0
Shroud Nexuses 0

Early-access data — altar upgrades verified through Level 4.

Altar count: up to 10 per world in early access (maxed at Flame Level 9); 1.0 raises the cap to 16. Re-check at launch.

How it interacts with the Shroud

Two rules govern the relationship between an altar and the Shroud (the hostile mist):

  • An altar must be placed outside the Shroud. It will not function inside the mist, so you always drop it on clear ground and let the build zone reach into the Shroud if you want.
  • A higher Flame lets you survive deeper in the Shroud longer. Your “Shroud Passage Level” determines how long you can push into red/Deadly Shroud. The common tactic is to place altars at Shroud boundaries, creating safe fallback points between the open world and the dangerous passages.
  • 1.0 change: confirmed in the 1.0 build, you can place a Flame Altar near the Shroud edge (from Flame 11), on top of the existing rule that an altar must sit outside the mist itself.

The verified behavior is a protected build zone plus extended Shroud-survival time - not a healing bubble. Do not assume the mist fully recedes or heals you inside the radius.

Resolved at 1.0: the safe zone itself is a protected build area plus extended Shroud-survival time — not a healing bubble. What the 1.0 patch notes add: from Flame 11 (or lower via a world setting) you can actively push the Shroud back from a Flame Altar, which is the closest thing to “receding the mist” the game ships.

Skill respec

The altar’s “Reset Skills” option refunds your allocated skill points. The cost is 1 Rune per previously-spent point. Runes come from defeating enemies, destroying Shroud Roots, looting chests, and - since Update 8 - recycling upgradable gear. That makes a respec cheap enough to experiment with: test a new path, and if it does not fit the weapon you want, refund it at the altar rather than forcing a build to match a role.

1.0 check (launch day): the patch notes announce no respec-cost change — the 1:1 Rune rate stands. One caveat: loading a pre-1.0 save resets the skill tree entirely, so your first “respec” after migrating is a full rebuild.

For what the new 12-path tree looks like and which points to refund first, see the Forging the Path skill tree guide.

How to place one

  • Recipe: craft it with 5 Stone in the inventory crafting menu. There is no level requirement - the recipe is granted during the Cinder Vault intro.
  • Spot: flat, unobstructed ground outside the Shroud. You cannot move an altar once placed; if you need it elsewhere, extinguish it and rebuild.
  • Expand: upgrade the build zone with Shroud Cores as your base grows, and place additional altars at Shroud boundaries as you push into new regions.

The cap: up to 10 in early access, 16 announced for 1.0

You can have up to 10 Flame Altars active per world in the current early-access build. The cap is tied to your Flame Level - it maxes out at 10 by Flame Level 9. Ten altars is enough to anchor every biome of the six-region world plus a few key Shroud boundaries, so plan their placement as you travel rather than hoarding the cap for the endgame.

1.0 note: confirmed in Keen’s official 1.0 launch patch notes, the per-world cap rises to 16. Sixteen gives more room as the 1.0 lava biome and floating islands expand where you can settle.

Fast-travel and Flame nodes on the map

Your altar plugs into a network of fixed landmarks - Ancient Spires, Flame Shrines and Return Beacons. The map opens on a Flame Shrine; drag to pan and tap a pin for details. (Altars are placed by you, so they are not marked here.)

FAQ

What does a Flame Altar do?
It is your home base: a safe build zone (starts 40x40x40, expandable to 120x120x120 with Shroud Cores), a fast-travel point, a skill-respec station, a respawn spot, and the source of the Rested stamina buff.
How do I place one?
Craft it with 5 Stone and put it on flat ground outside the Shroud. It cannot be moved once placed - to relocate, extinguish it and rebuild. You can have up to 10 per world (early-access cap; re-check at 1.0).
Can I respec my skills here?
Yes. The 'Reset Skills' option refunds your points at 1 Rune per previously-spent point. Runes come from defeating enemies, destroying Shroud Roots, looting chests, and recycling gear.
Why can't I place a Flame Altar (red placement marker)?
A Flame Altar can only sit on flat, unobstructed ground **outside the Shroud** — it will not function inside the mist, so placement is rejected there and on terrain that is too steep or blocked. Walk back to clear ground outside the Shroud (as players usually do at a Shroud boundary) and place it there; the build zone can then reach into the Shroud on its own. The recipe itself has no Flame level requirement, so this is always a spot problem, not a progression problem.
How do I move or delete a Flame Altar?
You cannot move an altar once it is placed. To relocate it, extinguish it and rebuild it where you want it — then upgrade the new zone again if you had already expanded the old one. Because the world cap is up to 10 altars (maxed out at Flame Level 9), extinguishing rather than abandoning keeps you from spending the cap on old spots.
How big can the Flame Altar build zone get?
It starts at 40×40×40 and upgrades in three steps: Level 2 is 80×80×80 for 1 Shroud Core, Level 3 is 120×120×120 for 5 Shroud Cores, and Level 4 is 160×160×160 for 5 Shroud Nexuses. Levels 2–4 also require Flame Level 1 / 2 / 3 respectively. Size is why placement matters: the sphere is the boundary of your permanent territory, so structures outside it do not count as yours.
Does the safe zone heal me or fully push back the Shroud?
Verified behavior is a protected build zone plus extended Shroud-survival time, not a healing bubble. Whether it fully recedes the mist within the radius is unconfirmed in early access - not yet independently verified.
